From boutique coffee roasters to organic groceries, and award-winning butchers to cafes specialising in homemade treats, the Eastern Bay area is jam-packed with an interesting variety of cafes, food stores, markets and bakeries.

Baker & Co
Baker & Co

For food just like “mum used to make”, pop in here and grab an Allpress coffee while you’re at it. The team at Baker & Co turn out sweet and savoury treats including muffins, scones, brioche, pies, wraps, tarts and sandwiches, as well as cookies, slices and cakes. Everything is made in house using free-range eggs, meat and local fresh produce. If you’re thinking about a party, they also cater for morning teas and lunches.

An Auckland-based franchise, Huckleberry is a grocery store that specialises in natural foods for customers on restricted diets, those who have food allergies or are interested in nutrition, health and wellbeing. The shop stocks both fresh and packaged food, as well as bodycare, homewares and household products.

Award-winning bacon, ham and sausages are the trademark of Avon Rzoska, who has celebrated 37 years of running his own business in Glen Innes. Avon and son William, now working there too, run the family butchery, and many customers are the children of the shop’s original customers. Avon is renowned for home-cured Christmas hams and gluten-free sausages and bacon, and the Argentinian cuts are also a favourite.

Marsic Brothers

Fish for breakfast, lunch or dinner – whether you want fresh, fried with chips, or smoked, Marsics carries a huge selection of whole and filleted varieties, all fresh from the market each day. The shop opens about 6.30am Monday to Saturday and serves its regular throng of customers until about 6.30pm, except on Saturday, when the shop closes at 1.30pm. They can also smoke your catch for you.

Fred was awarded New Zealand’s Best Espresso Roaster award in 2015/2016. Fred also packs freshly roasted coffee up and despatches it to customers directly.
